Cultivating Well-Being & Mindfulness: Practical Steps for Women to Prioritize Mental Health

Women are often the emotional anchors of their households and communities—balancing careers, caregiving, relationships, and personal goals. However, this pressure can add up over time. Without regular check-ins and care, stress can quietly evolve into anxiety, fatigue, or even burnout. Well-being is not about perfection—it’s about giving yourself what you need to feel steady and whole.

We spoke to Dr. Leighann Forbes, Vice President, Neuroscience Medical Affairs at Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine for insight on mental health and tips to build a sense of well-being and happiness.

Why Women’s Mental Health Deserves Attention

According to the ADAA, 1 in 3 women will face anxiety or depression in their lifetime, a rate twice that for men. This disproportionate impact is often exacerbated by the unique pressures women navigate, encompassing not only societal expectations, but also significant hormonal fluctuations that can profoundly affect their mental health.

Simple Practices for Your Everyday Routine

You don’t need a major life overhaul to feel better. Start with small shifts that build clarity, ease, and connection.

1. Build a Supportive Routine: Even a basic structure—waking at the same time, setting time for meals, or creating a “wind-down” ritual—can reduce overwhelm and increase emotional stability.

2. Make Time for Real Self-Care: Self-care isn’t about luxury—it’s about restoration. That might mean journaling, walking in silence, saying no more often, or asking for help without guilt.

3. Stay Connected, Even When It’s Hard: Isolation can deepen symptoms of anxiety and depression. A quick check-in with a trusted friend, a support group, or a moment of laughter can make all the difference.

4. Seek Help Without Shame: Therapy, medication, or wellness coaching can be powerful tools—not signs of weakness. The sooner you seek support, the faster healing can begin.

Wellness is Your Right, and Right For You!

Creating space for mental health is not a selfish act. It’s how women preserve their energy, purpose, and ability to show up for the people and goals that matter most. You don’t need to wait until you’re exhausted to start healing—you’re allowed to care for yourself in the now. It is your right... to be there for yourself before you’re there for others!
